On New Year’s Eve, Delhi issued over 4,200 challans; the number of drunk driving cases doubled. To guarantee smooth traffic flow and uphold law and order on the roadways, the Delhi Police kept a tight watch on New Year’s Eve.

More than 4,200 challans were sent out by officials to people for speeding, running red lights, driving under the influence, and other infractions.

On Monday, there was a lot of traffic jam at Red Fort, Kartavya Path, CP, ITO, and Sansad Marg. According to the police, additional force was used to regulate traffic in the vicinity of Defence Colony, GK, East of Kailash, Munirka, and Hauz Khas.

According to information made public by traffic authorities, 2,120 people were arrested for driving after intoxication between December 16 and December 31, 2023. The number of cases of drunk driving and other traffic infractions has nearly doubled from prior years.

According to data, more than 1,103 people were arrested for driving after intoxication between December 16 and December 31, 2022. However, over the same period in 2021, there were just 274 offenders.

“We have had double the number of challans issued this year due to active police presence on the streets,” stated a senior traffic officer.

Those who failed to use seat belts, drove on the wrong side of the road, and improperly parked received tickets. There were traffic cops stationed near all of the main thoroughfares, marketplaces, bars, and malls.

Between December 30 and December 31, 2023, around 549 people were arrested for driving after intoxication. The majority of challans were issued in Kapashera, which is in Southwest Delhi. Nangloi, Sangam Vihar, Tilak Nagar, and Nand Nagri came next.

The data shows that compared to prior years, the number of traffic challans issued by traffic police increased eightfold.

In contrast to 2,225 incidents in 2022 and 2,831 cases in 2021, a total of 16,173 cases of driving after intoxication were reported in 2023. According to the police, it was caused by year-round aggressive picketing and patrolling.

Southeast Delhi, including Badarpur, Sarita Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas, Najafgarh, Punjabi Bagh, etc., received the majority of the cases.
